The Secrets are Here for Frizz Free Hair

pic from self.com

It's been a year since I've had my last permanent hair change. From 2008-2011, I had my hair rebonded (2x) and permed (2x). Sometimes I just wanted to feel like I was worthy of high-maintenance hair and that I needed it in my Events and PR job (which entails a lot of public events, obviously). Just last year, when I finally had enough of these treatments, I switched to taking care of my hair instead and improve its natural wavy state. A few Victoria's Secret Fashion Show reruns, Cosmopolitan covers and makeup brochures, I was convinced. My wavy hair is actually beautiful.

Now the ultimate step to maintaining your natural hair type is this: keeping it frizz free. If it's frizz-free, it will be easier to wear, easier to style, and it looks better as well. And don't worry because it's not rocket science. Here are a few of my tried-and-tested tips:

1. Condition everyday, shampoo every other day. Shampoo, like soap, is meant to clean. Conditioner, on the other hand, is meant to put your hair on its proper condition (a.k.a. frizz free). Shampoo strips off the natural moisture of your scalp and its cleaning properties can actually keep your scalp clean up to 50 hours.
Of course the shampoo bottles tell you to shampoo everyday, that's how they sell their shampoo. But really, it's healthier to do it just every other day, and prioritize conditioning instead. If you got this down, you won't even need to use those moisturizing serums. Plus, they weigh the hair down.

2. Get a weekly intensive conditioning treatment. Just like how you need spa treatments every once in a while, you need to give your hair a moisture boost. And don't worry because you don't need to go to the salon for this. Buy hot oil or hair spa treatments in department stores--several even have variants that are meant for different kinds of hair--and use them at home. Just apply a dollop after you shampoo and towel-dry, massage onto hair (scalp 'til tips) and leave on for at least 20 minutes under a shower cap. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

3. NEVER comb your hair. This is a little radical but I stand by this tip. I have never combed, carried a comb or bought a comb for the past 2 years and my hair is at its best. I just let it air dry after bathing, put my bangs on their place and whenever I need to slightly adjust them, I just finger-comb. Awesome and frizz-free, really.

4. Sleep right. For less manageable hair, I suggest you sleep with your hair hoisted up, away from your face and away from the weight of your head. This way, there is least probability of tangles and it could also avoid facial allergies.

5. Wash it right. Here's how you should wash your hair: start with lukewarm water, apply shampoo/ conditioner, finish off with cold water. And don't forget to rinse thoroughly. Residue will cause oiliness, lack of body and dandruff.

6. Go easy on the heat. We know how much you love being made up but go easy on the heat if you want to tame frizz. This doesn't only apply to hair irons or harsh steamers but the sun as well. If you had to go to the beach or know that you might be under the heat of the sun for quite sometime, apply sunblock on your hair. I swear you'll thank me later.

7. Choose the right cut. Go to a reputable salon and book your hair cut appointment. Specifically say that you want a low maintenance, minimal frizz cut that could grow without having to be tamed all the time. Actually, it doesn't even need to be a super expensive cut (even I would die/starve/steal at the knowledge of P500 haircuts) just communicate with your stylist properly and go from there.
